White Christmas Winter Ale
Winter Ale - 6.5% ABV
I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas Winter Ale....
'5 Day's of Christmas' Beer Reviews - Day 3.
Well, are we all feeling Merry yet?
3 day's in and just 2 more days until Christmas itself 🎄
Today's beer comes from a very new brewery in Aberdeen called Fierce. A couple of weeks ago I reviewed one of their brews - Fuego Feroz (you can read it here - http://www.ohbeernetwork.com/single-post/2016/12/11/Fuego-Feroz) and was really impressed.
I've got a shelf full of their beer to enjoy over the festive period and I look forward to reviewing a lot more from them.
Priding themselves in offering "bold, strong flavours" in their brews, these guys like to push the boundary's and as far as I'm concerned, that's a great trait to have. So let's see what their first Christmas offering tastes like - White Christmas Winter Ale.
This comes wrapped in white tissue paper with a red string and label tied around it as you may see from the photo above - nice touch. The beer itself is a Pale Ale but that's packed full of Christmas flavours and spices apparently.
It sounds magical but will it be enough to make us feel like we're floating in the air?....
In The Glass:
A light brown toffee coloured beer. It has a murky body which becomes lighter near the bottom of the glass and good carbonation gives it a thick white cloudy head.
On The Nose:
Aromas of Christmas spices - no surprise there! This beer essentially smells like mulled wine. Cloves, a bit of Ginger and plenty of sweet fruity notes. The smell alone makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside 🎅
Christmas in a Glass.
Huge Yuletide flavours course through this brew. Cinnamon, black pepper, winter berries, orange peel, plum and ginger. It really is a medley of Festive favourites. Such a deep and rich combination of flavours.
The mouthfeel is smooth and malty at first but then spicy as you swallow. There's a slight warming effect that is familiar to eating ginger. The taste of orange is also very prominent and blends in really nicely.
At 6.5% ABV it isn't going to have you passing out on the sofa too early following Christmas dinner. In fact, the strong flavours throughout the beer may actually lend themselves nicely as a 'light and fluffy' after-dinner Digestif.
The only question I would ask is, are there too many flavours in the equation here?
Indeed, can there really be too many flavours in a 'Christmas Beer'?
Personally, I don't think there are set rules and it's important to go with whatever works.
In this case, yes there are SO MANY different tastes to comprehend that your tongue may feel like it's on Krypton Factor... but, it still tastes good and you can tell that is has been balanced pretty well.
The sheer mix of tastes means that just one of these would be enough for a evening, in my opinion at least. It's a bottle that I would definitely buy more of however and I can see it becoming a yearly Christmas tradition in our house.
Everything aside though, this beer certainly deserves one particular plaudit - 'The Most Christmas Flavoured Beer' I've tried so far this year.
The guys have clearly gone to town in giving this Winter Ale some serious Christmas Spirit - I wonder did they dress up as elves and play Christmas music when they were brewing it??
Whatever their secret is, great job Fierce Beer 😀🍻
