Tokyo

Brewdog

Intergalactic Stout - 16.5% ABV

Prepare for Lift Off...

Today's beer is a Special One.

There are many reasons for this but the main one is that Tokyo was officially the first beer i had in 2017.

I had been saving it for a special occasion and when better to crack open this '16.5% ABV' BAD BOY, than 12 Midnight on New Years Eve. After all, I didn't have to work the next day and luckily enough, I didn't have to work the day after that either!! 😳

We wanted a quiet one this year so we opted to stay at home. As midnight chimed in by Big Ben live on the BBC, it was closely followed by Robbie Williams serenading me as I poured the thick black liquid into a brandy glass ( which seemed holy appropriate for this beer and on this occasion).

The excitement was thick in the air - for me anyway (my pregnant wife seemed somewhat preoccupied singing Millennium to the dog) as I had been looking forward to trying this beer for a very long time!

So, the stage was set, the beer was poured, the excitement was high and the time was right.

Let's see what this Monster Stout had in store... Cheers 🍻

In The Glass:

Black as black can be. Super dark with no head whatsoever after 30 seconds.

On The Nose:

A massive and heavy stench of alcohol fills the glass. There is maybe a hint of cranberry as well but honestly, it's hard to tell.

16.5% - good night Vienna 😮

To Taste:

BIG, BAD and VERY BOOZY. One thing is clear, this is not for the faint hearted!

You get a significant alcohol burn on the way down but really, I'm not surprised! Apart from that, there is a nice taste of cranberry and winter fruits that briefly interrupt the madness. The sweetness of the fruit combines with the alcohol to create a heavy and comforting taste, nearly like sipping a glass of port.

It's not actually a bad tasting brew at all. It's got a thick and heavy mouthfeel, that's for sure, but it is actually pretty smooth ahead of the boozy backlash and the flavours are great.

This is a special type of a drink and deserves a special type of occasion. Not one to have with the lads down in the pub on a Friday night. The fact of the matter is, this is either an 'evening ender' or the 'beginning of a bender' depending on what time you decide to drink.

I enjoyed it.... and then had the best sleep of my life!!

Happy New Year everyone
