Westmalle Dubbel

Westmalle Trappist

Trappist Dubbel - 7% ABV

What if god had a beer, what would it be and would you serve it to his face?...

After Friday's shenanigans of reviewing a beer that represents the sinning nature of arrogance and selfishness, today we turn our sights 360 degrees and review one of the Holiest of beers. A Trappist Ale no doubt and all the way from Belgium.

Ladies and Gentlemen I present to you the infamous Westmalle Dubbel. For those of you who don't know, when an Ale is Trappist it basically means that it's brewed by monks and usually all of the profits made, go back into their monastery. Fair Play.

Originally, Trappist Beers tended to be brewed as sustenance for the monks to aid them as they work in the fields throughout the day. The benefit is that the beers tend to taste fantastic, well when they've been brewed, in some cases for over a few hundred years, you can expect them to be pretty good 🙂

So time to try this Dubbel out for myself - I've been pretty excited to taste it for a while now!

Westmalle Dubbel Poured - Craft Beer Reviews

In The Glass:

Dark red with a thick and solid cream coloured head.

On The Nose:

A very malty smell. Caramel throughout with a sweet earthy aroma. That familiar Belgium fruity yeast fragrance just floats out of the glass.

To Taste:

Earthy and very malt forward.

This beer tastes very well balanced. It's been brewed as a sweet and pleasant drink. Brown sugar and caramel come through with hints of tobacco in the taste. Trappist Brewing aside, this is the perfect beer for a Sunday. After a long, fresh walk on a cold winter afternoon, this brew is the ideal reward to sit down with on the sofa, ideally in front of a raging log fire. Heaven 😇

Whilst the ABV is a heavy enough at 7%, it tastes like a beer that you could enjoy long into the evening and at a relaxed and enjoyable rate. There is a slight warming alcohol presence at the back end and you would expect that with a dubbel, it really adds prominence to the style's character.

Along with the wonderful sweet, fruity and caramel malt flavours, then the warming alcohol essence that floats down the back of your throat, the experience ends nicely with a freshness that just clears the pallet up for your next mouthful.

This is truly a lovely malty pleasure of a beer with a holy kick and a soul warming presence.

Amen to that 🙏
