Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

Sierra Nevada

Pale Ale - 5.6% ABV

An Original Craft Beer Superstar but does it still deserve it’s plaudits in today’s highly competitive market?

It’s safe to say that Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is one of the most well known craft beers in the Western World.

Brought to us by Ken Grossman and Paul Camusi back as far as the 1980’s. Sierra Nevada Brewery are looked upon as one of the true founding pioneers of the Craft Beer Revolution to hit the States so many years ago.

Known as a sweet and hoppy version of an American Pale Ale, we should be in for a real treat with this classic.

Will it live up to it’s mind blowing reputation though…

In The Glass:

A light golden, nearly amber coloured ale with minimal carbonation (due to being bottle conditioned) and with a fluffy white head.

On The Nose:

A piney and light aroma with a zesty punch. Grapefruit and citrus hit the nostrils and urge you to taste the beer within.

To Taste:

This is more earthy than I expected. It's light and easy drinking and whilst it definitely has a bitter kick, it also displays a sweet and malty character.

There is no doubt that Cascade Hops are used in this brew from the floral and grapefruit like flavours and this does a fantastic job of freshening up the mouthfeel and giving it a lighter body.

The caramel flavours from the malts then proceed to balance the beer out wonderfully, giving you a fantastic mixture of hoppy bitterness at the back and a noticeable spiciness right at the very soul of the brew.

Overall, it's a nice tasting Pale Ale. Whilst I appreciate it was a trend setter for it's time I wonder if as the rest of the world have caught up has it even got overtaken in many instances.

Like Punk IPA this is a safe bet to choose if you want to guarantee a pleasant, hoppy and easy drinking Pale Ale that you would be happy to enjoy over an evening.

In my opinion, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale most certainly demands a place at any craft beer lovers table today, just like it did all those decades ago. Another perfect example of a beer that can be enjoyed by either Craft veterans or beginners alike.
