A Traditional Scottish Dessert - In a Beer?...

Dessert flavours in beers are not unheard of. In fact they are actually becoming very popular, just ask Omnipollo, Wild Beer and Mad Hatter Breweries to name but a few.

Today's review is from our friends at Fierce as they attempt to emulate the flavours of the Scottish dessert 'Cranachan' (a mixture of whipped cream, whisky, honey and fresh raspberries, with toasted oatmeal) in a fruity, oatmeal Pale Ale.

Sounds intriguing...

Cranachan Killer Poured - Craft Beer Reviews

In The Glass:

At first glance, this looks like a morning fruit juice. Specifically, something with berries in it. It's thick, red and fairly viscous with very little carbonation and little to no head retention to speak about.

On The Nose:

Simple - it's got a strong and dominant aroma of raspberries.

To Taste:

A beautiful tasting glass of raspberry smoothy.

Really that is what it's like.

It has a thick and creamy mouthfeel and is very smooth to drink, due mainly to the oatmeal that they've used in the beer. At 5.5% ABV, it also hides the alcohol very well.

I feel that this would be the perfect companion in the summertime during a hot a sunny July afternoon. Ideally it would be served nice and cold. Controversially, I'd say it could even work with a few ice cubes floating in it (perhaps too far?!).

The sweet raspberry flavours dominate the taste in the same way that they did in the aroma. The mix of the creamy and smooth mouthfeel of the beer lends itself nicely to the very berry flavours, It's just not really my thing.

It's very hard to give this a ranking. It does taste nice but in the same way a raspberry smoothie would. It's not really like a beer but I am kind of enjoying it. One or two of these would certainly be my limit though, before it would start to get a little bit too much.

Overall, I'm not sure it's really my bag but it will definitely have its own fan club and I know plenty of people who think it's great. I would say, if you are the kind of person who likes drinking Kopparberg or other really sweet and fruity ciders, then this is definitely something you should try.

A refreshing and fairly original style beer.
